It is with deep regret that we are writing to inform you of the untimely death of Dr Helen Bolter, who died on the 28th March following her battle with cancer.
Linda Bolter, Helen’s Mum
“Dr Helen Elizabeth Bolter was our amazing daughter, sister, dog mother, auntie, friend, godmother, vet, film producer and altogether wonderful human. She was the kindest, most compassionate, feisty and compassionate person and we are all honoured to have known and loved her.Â
Helen died on 28th March 2023 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. FND Hope UK was close to Helen’s heart as she was a Trustee of the charity and wanted to raise as much money for FND Hope UK as possible. The charity is very much in need of more funds to raise awareness of Functional Neurological Disorder, to support the FND community and to advance research for the prevention, treatment of and recovery from FND”.Â
Cindy Smulders – Chair of Trustees
“Dr Helen Bolter, was a Trustee for FND Hope UK. She got involved because she felt strongly about social injustice, wanting to help others who had a misunderstood diagnosis and believed that the stigma attached to that misunderstood diagnosis amplified their problems. Her compassion for others held no bounds. Helen was graceful, intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind. She was feisty, fierce, kind and funny.
It was an honour to work alongside her on the Board of Trustees for FND Hope UK, where she was always my ‘wingman’.
Helen was only 41 years old when she died and had so much more to give. She came to completely understand the struggles our community has when she knew, herself, that she was very unwell and found that she had to fight, even as a highly-trained and articulate medical expert, to be listened to by the medical profession.Â
Our Executive Director, Dawn Golder, and I attended the Celebration of Helen’s Life on 18th June 2023; it was a complete honour to be there. We were also asked to talk on behalf of the charity about FND and about her involvement. She had requested that any donations at the end of her Service should be made to FND Hope UK. It was a beautiful day for an extraordinary woman.
In Helen’s honour we will be creating a ‘Helen Bolter Award’, the details will be published soon.
Often remembered and never forgotten”
With warmth and sympathy,
Cindy and the FND Hope UK board of Trustees
