What is the Helen Bolter Award?

The Helen Bolter Award is an annual programme to identify, recognise and reward any healthcare professional who has gone above and beyond within the NHS or private sector to remove the stigma surrounding Functional Neurological Disorder.

This could be:

  • Removing the negative and or discriminatory attitudes that others have around FND
  • Has a positive attitude towards FND and reduces/removes internal shame that people may have surrounding their FND
  • Educate others and provide factual evidence based information on FND with a positive attitude; challenging myths and stereotypes.
  • Focuses on the positive
  • Treats everyone with dignity and respect; offering support and encouragement.
  • Aware of their own attitude and behaviour and offers non judgmental thinking.

Healthcare professionals can be a porter, nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, dietician, midwife and many more. Any medical professional or allied health professional can also nominate another medical or allied health professional,

The Helen Bolter Award was a decision made by the Board of Trustees in memory of Dr Helen Bolter who was a trustee of FND Hope UK. She got involved because she felt strongly about social injustice, wanting to help others who had a misunderstood diagnosis and believed that the stigma attached to that misunderstood diagnosis amplified their problems. Her compassion for others held no bounds. Helen was graceful, intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind. She was feisty, fierce, kind and funny.

Helen was only 41 years old when she died following a short battle with cancer, and had so much more to give. She came to completely understand the struggles our community has when she knew, herself, that she was very unwell and found that she had to fight, even as a highly-trained and articulate medical expert, to be listened to by the medical profession.

What is the Helen Bolter Award?

We ask for the nominations to be created using the Helen Bolter Award form here:

The Judging Process

September

October
An initial sift of all nominations will take place every October via two trustees from FND Hope UK

November
From the initial review, the chosen nominations from the Trustees will be added to our webpage – see below, and our community will then get a chance to vote for their favourite nomination.
You will be able to see how many votes have been received per nomination, this will last from 1st November to 31st November.

December
The top 5 nominations following the voting process will be discussed by the Bolter Family and a Trustee of FND Hope UK. The final panellist will then decide on the winner. (The panellists’ decision is final).

January
The winner will be announced on our social media sites (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and also on our webpage each year).
The winner of the award will receive a certificate signed by the Chair of FND Hope UK, including the nomination, and posted to the healthcare professional in a frame.
The winner will also announce via their own social media site, they received the award.
FND Hope UK will also contact media outlets for publication announcing the award

The Voting Process

Our community now has the opportunity to vote for their favourite nomination. As per above under the Judging Process, the nominations received have been reviewed by a number of our Trustees and the top nominations have been added to our webpage (see below).
