The Helen Bolter Award is an annual programme to identify, recognise and reward any healthcare professional who has gone above and beyond within the NHS or private sector to remove the stigma surrounding Functional Neurological Disorder.
What is the Helen Bolter Award?
This could be:
- Removing the negative and or discriminatory attitudes that others have around FND
- Has a positive attitude towards FND and reduces/removes internal shame that people may have surrounding their FND
- Educate others and provide factual evidence based information on FND with a positive attitude; challenging myths and stereotypes.
- Focuses on the positive
- Treats everyone with dignity and respect; offering support and encouragement.
- Aware of their own attitude and behaviour and offers non judgmental thinking.
Healthcare professionals can be a porter, nurse, doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, dietician, midwife and many more. Any medical professional or allied health professional can also nominate another medical or allied health professional,
The Helen Bolter Award was a decision made by the Board of Trustees in memory of Dr Helen Bolter who was a trustee of FND Hope UK. She got involved because she felt strongly about social injustice, wanting to help others who had a misunderstood diagnosis and believed that the stigma attached to that misunderstood diagnosis amplified their problems. Her compassion for others held no bounds. Helen was graceful, intelligent and not afraid to speak her mind. She was feisty, fierce, kind and funny.
Helen was only 41 years old when she died following a short battle with cancer, and had so much more to give. She came to completely understand the struggles our community has when she knew, herself, that she was very unwell and found that she had to fight, even as a highly-trained and articulate medical expert, to be listened to by the medical profession.
