I am Alison and I am a volunteer Peer Support Worker and Fundraising Events Manager for FND Hope UK. I have Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). This condition disrupts the way the body and brain communicate through the nervous system. It can cause a wide range of symptoms and can be extremely painful and debilitating. Specialists are few and treatment is extremely limited. Many FND patients become disabled and the loss of their independence alongside the lack of treatment can cause sufferers to become isolated and feel like we are alone. We often feel discarded, dismissed, stigmatised and ignored. I want to help give FND patients a voice that will be heard so that help can be given.
There is nothing I like more than a good natter. I am known for my ability to talk! I just can’t help it! It is just who I am! I find it difficult when I am on my own for long periods of time. Therefore, I am challenging myself to keep completely silent for 48 hours from 12 noon on Friday 17th December to 12 noon on Sunday 19th December. I will not speak, sing, text, or DM/PM on social media. There will always be somebody with me for the duration of my silence to make sure that I am keeping quiet! The only thing I will do is post occasional updates on my fundraising page to let you know how I am doing.
Your contribution will help support the trial of a telephone helpline for those with FND, manned by specially FND trained nurses. This helps to give people with FND a voice and also an understanding, medically trained ear to listen and advise. Now I just need to make sure I can keep my mouth shut for 48 hours………..
