Knowledge is Power. Research for Functional Movement Disorders (FMD) and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is quickly increasing and additional articles can be found by looking at the resource section at the end of any research article you are reading.

The denial of medical care may be an unfamiliar phrase or abstract concept to some. To others, it is a reality they have had the unfortunate opportunity to experience either first hand or through a friend or loved one. Misdiagnosis is more likely to occur when the FND label is given because of negative test results versus the presence of postive signs.
Functional Neurological Disorder diagnosis is complicated at best. This leaves patients searching for answers to common questions. Many allied health professionals are also perplexed by this disorder. Recent technology is producing new images which may unlock the 100-year-old mystery to FND. The 3T MRI has given us ‘Spectacular brain images reveal surprisingly simple brain structure…’.
The perplexities of this disorder affect not only patients and their families but also the medical community in general. Recent research articles are available to understand better what some call the greatest challenge for neurologists. Though, not everyone agrees on the path that Functional Neurological Disorder/Conversion Disorder should take. We will move the FND agenda farther forward if we collectively join forces and tackle the various functional issues. This will best be achieved through a respectful, collaborative approach and being open minded to new ideas.
Patient care is often a problem. Professor Mark Edwards has kindly taken time to help clarify and respond to questions that desperately need answers. There is a constant battle between patient care and patient cost. It was once mentioned that “business decisions and clinical decisions are not always compatible”. Illness has no boundaries. Functional Neurological Disorder does not care your gender, ethnicity, age, education level or wealth. When we collaborate togethere, we become a force for change; creating more opportunities to utilize information and resources. FND Hope and the Genetic Alliance have teamed up together to strengthen the voices of those affected by FND. The FND Scientific Registry allows patients and researchers to work together. The larger participation the more the data, which will lead better research. Our FND Scientific Registry platform allows patients to be in control of their health information at all times.
More Functional Neurological Disorder research is a need that is now being recognized. Research teams around the globe are working hard devoting their time, talents, and funding to find answers. We at FND Hope thank each and every one that is working toward this common goal.
